The Sun's Fire: Combustion as Sacred Purification

When a planet moves within a close range of degrees to the Sun, it disappears from view. This phenomenon is called combustion.

When the planet becomes invisible to the naked eye, it is overwhelmed by the Sun’s brilliant radiance. Combustion marks a key phase in a planet’s synodic cycle (its journey relative to the Sun as seen from Earth). In Vedic astrology, each planet has a specific combustion range—an angular distance from the Sun, where it's influence is considered internalised or “burnt up.”

Yet this invisibility is not punishment. Think of it more like a private audience. The planet has not stopped functioning; its energy has turned inward.

Mercury and Venus, the two planets closest to the Sun because of their natural synodic cycles have narrower combustion ranges compared to Mars, Jupiter, or Saturn. The Sun does not combust the Moon; the Moon with Sun instead marks the New Moon phase.

The Exception: Budhaditya Yoga

One important exception occurs when the Sun and Mercury are in the same zodiac sign under positive conditions. When both are well placed, strong in their own signs and in an angle, they form Budhaditya Yoga. Since Mercury is frequently with the Sun, this is not an uncommon yoga. But if it is strong it can support intelligence, writing, creativity, and leadership.

However, if Mercury is very closely combust (within about 5°), this same configuration can produce challenges with communication, decision-making, and objectivity. As always, planetary strength and placement determine whether the yoga uplifts or distorts its natural expression.

These are the commonly used combustion degree ranges for each planet.

The combustion ranges are approximate and vary slightly by lineage, but these reflect the general thresholds used in Jyotish.

What matters most is understanding that inner planets have narrower combustion orbs due to their synodic cycles, and the outer planets occupy wider combustion zones.

The Experience: The Smelting Process

Combustion is often described as a weakening of a planet, but it can also be understood as an alchemical purification.

The heat of the Sun melts down the planet’s visible, ego-driven, or material pursuits.

Externally, the planet may struggle to produce tangible results based on its house rulership and natural indications (karakas). Internally, however, it gains strength.

Hidden Within the Heart of the Sun

When a planet moves too close to the Sun, it enters the solar furnace. Its light does not disappear, but it can no longer operate on its own terms.

You may experience some of these effects, especially if your chart ruler is combust by birth or by transit:

  • Subjectivity: So close to the fire that objectivity is difficult.

  • Invisibility: Feeling unseen or unheard, as though efforts are being burned away.

  • Recalibration: A reset. The Sun re-codes the planet to act in alignment with higher purpose rather than habit.

The Planetary Ministers: Natural Indications

When planets are combust, their outward functions are refined into their essential wisdom, devotion, or duty under the authority of the Sun.

Mercury (Budha): The Discernment

Karakas: Speech, intellect, commerce, logic, communication, and the capacity to distinguish truth from illusion.

When Combust: The clever mind is stripped back to pure knowing.

Venus (Shukra): The Value

Karakas: Relationships, harmony, desire, beauty, luxury, and the ability to discern what is worthy of devotion.

When Combust: Personal satisfaction is stripped back to pure devotion.

Mars (Mangala): The Drive

Karakas: Action, courage, physical strength, ambition, competition, and the instinct to protect.

When Combust: Personal will is stripped back to right action (dharma).

Combustion is the Sacred Forge. Stop forcing external outcomes and listen deeply for the quiet instructions being delivered within the heart of the Sun.
