New Moon May 22: The Star of Fire!

Happy New Moon in the Star of Fire!

The new Moon in Krittika nakshatra is an opportunity to access the energy of fire! Fire transforms, fire ignites and fire is purifying!

New Moon Phase begins: May 21, 9:06am Pacific Time New Moon Phase ends: May 22, 10:39am Pacific Time

Let's talk about the new Moon in earthly Taurus first! (Just a reminder for my western astrology friends, I use the sidereal zodiac calculations with the Vedic system.) Just prior to the new Moon as it reaches a closeness to it's deepest wane, Moon receives a full aspect from expansive and joyful Jupiter. This can lend an optimistic attitude as Moon moves closer to the Sun and dims to dark. However, this new Moon is the second month in a row that has serious and pragmatic undertones since somber Saturn is involved. Saturn is in a harmonious trine to the new Moon so this should be an easier ask than last month. New Moon energy is generally fantastic for a new beginning. Please carefully consider your objective this month since a harmonious Saturn influence is present. Be sure slow and steady progress is planned for Saturn and that your plans are down-to-earth...the new Moon is in Taurus after all, too!f Consider closely matters related to the house that the new Moon falls in for you and the meanings associated with that house. (read your new Moon horoscope on my website horoscopes page!). Especially since Venus, ruler of Taurus is now retrograde. This also indicates some re-work needed in matters related to this house. You may want to implement large scale plans once Venus goes direct on late June. Set your intentions now and begin slowly. Once the Moon begins to wax the influence of Mars to the Moon will be felt veru strongly, enhancing the fiery and courageous energy of Krittika nakshatra. The major watch out here is to be patient and mindful of your interactions with others and not allow the fire element to overtake your mind! Mars will strongly influence Moon through the morning (Pacific Time) of May 23. This can bring fiery emotions, passionate encounters, impatience and potential arguments, so please connect with diplomatic Venus in Taurus at this time!

Excerpt from my new book, Vedic Astrology for Beginners, on sale now in stores and

Krittika, “The One Who Cuts” Deity: Agni (or Surya) Symbol: Axe or Sharp Weapon Shakti: The Power to Burn Quality: Mixed

Agni, the deity of Krittika represents the element of fire, and this nakshatra emanates blazing fire and its purification ability.

Fire also is associated with cooking and the digestive fire which is required to transmute our food into energy. Dahana shakti that is within this nakshatra is the power to burn.

The symbol of the axe or a sharp object can be interpreted literally or metaphorically as the ability transform. The sharp tool can challenge or cut through things, either to cut away disease and provide healing circumstances or to destroy another. Fire can be used for transformation although the process of destruction must come before creation.

You can read more about Krittika and the other nakshatras and more in my new book Vedic Astrology for Beginners.

Kritiika nakshatra is supportive of:

- Purification - Transformation - Courageous activities - Beginning new ventures or events (this is specific to this nakshatra AND the new Moon - double good indications for new projects!).

Depending upon the house that the new Moon occurs there will be an opportunity for energizing, purifying and starting new events or ventures in a specific area of your life. Be sure to check your new Moon forecast that is part of your monthly horoscope.

  • New Moon Phase begins: May 21, 9:06am Pacific Time

Best Timing for New Moon Ritual

May 22, 10:39am - 2:38pm Pacific Time (Krittika Nakshatra) May 22, 2:39pm - May 23 11:45pm Pacific Time (Rohini nakshatra - stable earth nakshatra also good for beginning new ventures - more fixed vs. fiery transformation of Krittika).

A brief but important message from me before I sign off here,

Firstly, I hope that you, your family and friends are all safe and well. This is a difficult time for all on our planet right now, and is reflected in the cosmic sky.

Please be on the lookout for my June forecast toward the end of May. June 5 begins eclipse season, and this time around we have three eclipses instead of two. [Insert hairball emoji]. :)

Eclipses are considered to be inauspicious events since the life promoting luminaries, Sun or Moon, are without their light during eclipses. You will get your monthly forecast and your two lunar forecast emails next month, which will be all about the eclipses, too!

Lastly, I am so grateful for your support during such difficult times - thank you! I know every dollar spent at this time is carefully considered.

Be well,
